CHAPTER SEVEN
I do think ours was a just cause, to try to give the Afghan people the safety to go about their daily lives, without fearing the Insurgents. The other important part was to continue the war against terrorism. On paper, it seemed very noble indeed. However, being in the midst of it, ‘The Cause’ sometimes just did not seem worth the loss of life on either side, or the civilians caught up in the middle.
Modern warfare is fought as much by the politicians as it is by the soldier.
The cause of the war in Afghanistan is based in history. Following the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, and the fall of the Afghan Communist government in 1992, a lengthy civil war raged on between the various factions of anti-Communist Afghan fighters, who called themselves the Mujahidin.
In this realm of chaos, Mullah Mohammed Omar was seen as a new an upcoming leader by some former Mujahedeen. He was himself a former mujahedin fighter who returned to his home village after the fall of the Communist regime. He then led a new armed group called the Taliban. The Taliban actually means ‘student’ and many of the original recruits to Omar's new movement were Islamic religious students. Other former mujahedin leaders of Pashtun background began to join with the Taliban as this new group wanted to impose their own form of law and order Afghanistan. They wanted to impose an extreme version of Islamic law. Under this extreme Taliban led Islamic law that was imposed on the local populous, men are expected to grow beards and attend religious services regularly, women are not allowed to work outside the home or attend school. Television is banned, and religious minorities had to wear clothing that could identify them as ‘non-Muslim’. Then in 2001 as well as attracting the support of Osama bin Guyen and his Al-Qaida organization they ordered the destruction of all non-Islamic idols and statues in areas under their control.
Through the autumn of 2001 the Taliban continued to put pressure on the Northern Alliance. This pressure was often with the aid of Osama bin Guyen and his Arab forces. Then on September 9th 2001, the Northern Alliance leader Ahmad Shah Massoud was mortally wounded in an assassination attempt. The attempt was carried out by two Arab men posing as journalists. This attack was the work of Al-Qaida and was a possible prelude to the airline hijackings and terrorism that occurred in the United States on September 11th. The Northern Alliance responded to Massoud's killing with an aerial attack on Kabul on the night of September 11th.
The killing of Massoud was coordinated with the terror attacks on the United States that took place on September 11, which many saw as significant as the attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941. As the United States laid blame for the attacks on Al-Qaida and Osama Bin Guyen, they began to formulate plans to take the fight to Al-Qaida and its Taliban sponsors in Afghanistan. Which was the start of Americas Global War on Terror.
